Hon. Albert W. Chapin, one of the pioneers of the slate quarrying industry in Monson, an ex-State Senator, and a Civil War veteran, was born in this town, June 11, 1842, son of Arctas and Mary W. (Whiting) Chapin. A descendant of the Chapin family, he is of English or Welsh origin. Chapins have figured prominently among the early settlers of Springfield, Massachusetts. The immigrant ancestor, Samuel, came to the country with a brother, who was killed by the Indians soon after his arrival. Biography of Cyrus A. Packard

Cyrus A. Packard, who was First Selectman of Blanchard, Piscataquis County, for twenty-five years and Town Clerk for sixteen years, was born in Hebron, Maine, December 22, 1822. A son of Reuel K. and Patience (Bowker) Packard, he was a descendant of Samuel Packard, who came from England in the ship “Diligence” in 1638, and settled in what is now the city of Brockton, Massachusetts. From Samuel Packard the line is traced through Zaccheus, who married Sarah Howard; James, who married Jemima Keith; Reuben, who married Anna Perkins; and Ichabod, Cyrus A.
