The document titled “Special 1837 Maine Census of Unincorporated Townships and Plantations of Penobscot County” was meticulously transcribed by Donald and Evelyn Wright on February 23, 2002. Originally held at the Maine State Archives, this rare census enumerates individuals in various unincorporated areas of Penobscot County as of March 1, 1837. The census captures detailed demographical data on residents, distributed into categories such as age groups and family heads, across different unincorporated territories, both east and west of the Penobscot River. Enumerator Jacob W. Stinchfield, among others, pledged to execute a comprehensive and accurate count via direct inquiries at each household, adhering to specifications of a legislative act.
